Thanks, Will, for the lone response to my request for an overview of
the
three editions of OS X now available to us S900 freaks. I have always
found
your constructive advice most helpful in the past, and continue to do
so.
Your welcome no problem .
>From what you are saying I gather (since F-key macros are not of huge
interest to me, and I have no DVD drive) that the only real advantage
for me
in going beyond 10.2.8 might be a slight gain in speed, but at the
cost of
some of the stability I currently enjoy, plus the chance that some of
my RAM
might not be good enough to handle Panther or Tiger and would need
replacing. Right?
Well no, every version of OSX is better then the last, once the kinks
are worked out . Panther is as worked as it's going to get. I'm sure
Tiger will be good as well given another upgrade or so . Runs great on
my Pismo Powerbook. I've not noticed any real problems with it on the
Pismo or Umax machines. I've just read of lots of problems even on new
machines so have stuck with Panther as my working setup for now. Your
running 10.2.8 so you got past many of the RAM issues . A cpu speed
upgrade or switch to G4 could trigger RAM issues again. It's not
something to fear just an issue to watch out for and work through if
you need to. I had lots of older RAM that came with the J700 Umax and
mixed RAM bought on the cheap at different Places. All 128 chips bought
from OWC or some other Mac Place could have saved me a lot of work.
Efficient networking is a major issue for me too, as my two S900s are
networked (via Ethernet hub): one (Mole) running under Jag (G3/Sonnet
Crescendo 450), the other (Badger) under 9.1 (604e). I have a Dr Bott
MoniSwitch monitor switch (wonderful invention!), so I can control
both
machines with one monitor and keyboard/mouse.
However, I don't think I have the network set up properly. On the
occasions
when it doesn't freeze or crash during startup, Badger takes forever
(like,
20 minutes, literally, with all kinds of Keychain prompts) to boot and
connect with Mole, and, whenever I investigate the Network Browser,
they
seem to be networked via AppleTalk as well as Ethernet ... is that
possible,
or even desirable?
I am far from a networking expert . I just mess around until things
work making tons of mistakes along the way ;-) The taking 20 min to
connect when booting is a well known issue. One of your settings is
wrong. It's been too long (years!) for me to remember the fix and I
don't have time to look into it sorry. Someone else can perhaps help
you. If it comes to me later I will post the answer . It's something
simple to fix is all I remember. Maybe switch apple talk to a different
setting sounds right. There are also several good Mac networking
forums. lowend mac may well have a networking forum I think. here's one
you can read on the web here and join if you wish:

I would like to upgrade Badger to a G4 and Jag, as I do quite a bit of
graphics work, but I can't seem to find a 450 or 500 card anywhere,
certainly not on eBay, and I don't want to go any higher than 500
because of
the issues we are all by now aware of with the S900 and the higher
speeds.
Need to look harder;-) Ebay sometimes has good deals not looked lately.
the lowendmac swap list on the web@
http://mail.maclaunch.com/Lists/macnetwork/List.html
is one of the better places to find a great deal . just a few days ago
someone was selling an XLR5 Zif carrier card for $35.00 which you can
add cheap Zif's to for upgrading. One of the very best upgrades for our
machines.
Perhaps you have some insights into all this. And, yes, in case you
were
wondering, The Wind in the Willows was indeed my favourite book when
I was a
kid! I also own an old, now sadly cannibalized J700 called Ratty!
Yep great book loved it years ago. Best of luck Will S
