Hi ;

I am upgrading a PowerMac 8600 for a friend and note that the User Manual states that max RAM is achieved by inserting 8- 64Meg 128 pin EDO Dims.

Can the 8600 see 4- 128Meg EDO Dims from my second S-900 as 512Meg total? Could they be interleaved? Should they be?

The reason for the manual saying 64MB Dimms is simple. There were no 128 MB chips when any of the PCI PowerMacs were new. Lucky for us they all have chip controllers that will take 128 MB Dimms. It should possible to fill all 8 slots with 128 chips if you had them. Interleaving will offer a bit of extra speed if it works. Which seems to depend on both the quality of the DIMMS and the CPU. Some combos work others don't. So you will just have to try it.
Also the PowerForce for PCI 900Mhz G3 upgrade I purchased is stated to work with OS9.1 max.

Can any one tell me from experience if this is true and it won't install on OS9.2.2 or OS9.2?

TIA
Ernie

The reason for the PCI G3 upgrade saying 9.1 is the max. is similar. 9.1 is the official Apple Max for any of the PCI Power Macs. You need OS 9 helper to install OS 9.2.x or install on a newer machine and move the Hard drive over. Once you have a working OS 9.2 on the machine it should work fine with the G3 upgrade. Sounds like perhaps the machine already has 9.2 on it? If so shouldn't be an issue. Things are not always as simple as it seems they should be on these old machines. However it never fails to amaze me how well they continue to work many years after they were made. Many of the PCI power Macs are going on 10 years old! Best of luck Will S
