You shouldn't have to "sign in", if your settings are right. You just click on the news server account you have set up in SM, and the news groups you have subscribed to, should download.

You have to sign in, and click the "always offer credentials" option to force that. e-s behaves one way if you do sign in and another if you don't, but it does not present the NNTP "Authentication required" prompt to trigger sending login so you have to force it.

The problem is usually that people either don't force it, or use the wrong server. And if you use secure login you have to connect to the server which has the matching certificate.
