I've applied the patch from Bug 456053 and made a custom SeaMonkey build to see whether it has any effect, and indeed - it appears to do the trick in this case.

If there is a patch which works, why wouldn't that be the 'key' (for gecko devlopers) to /actually/ fix the problem so that no one needs to apply a patch?

The patch at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=456053 was posted 3 years ago by Andriy Tkachuk. That was during Tb3 and gecko 1.9.1 and SeaMonkey 2.0 development -- many many version releases ago.
