What does "went down" mean?
Apps is apps and data is data. SM and TB are apps. They use news and
mail files which are data. Mail and news accounts are part of the
profile. Mail and news data files are used by the accounts but they are
not part of the profile. The default is to store them in the profile
sub-directory but you can store them anywhere the OS has access. And as
many versions of SM and TB as you have on the HDD can all use the same
files.
If your SM is broken get one that is not broken. Put your data in a
neutral location. App versions come and go, data is forever. My mail
and news files started life in Netscape.
