I had the same problem. I solved it by installing
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/provider-for-google-calendar/
(I switched from CalDAV back to Google Calendar)...
Already installed here. Doesn't help the problem with 2.17. I still get
endlessly prompted for the password and fail to connect.
