Example: I haven't a clue what 'modal status updates' are, let alone NON-modal ones! That's for folks who learned about how to understand and manipulate computers in class ~ what to call things, so others could follow along.
In programming-speak, a modal object is one that demands your attention before you can get on working with other things. An example of that would be a modal dialogue box that pops up to inform you of an error and you must click on OK before you can continue working. A bad example of that would be a modal dialogue box that pops up to inform you of a success, such as being able to save a photo. (I have an otherwise great iPhone app that does that and it really annoys me.)
So, that's the long story. The short story is that something non-modal can be ignored without affecting work flow. Something modal must be addressed before anything further can be done. :)
I bought my first-of-many Macs in 1986, and have ever since stumbled along, learning as I go. When I trip, I give a shout to the list, and some kind soul helps out. Many thanks for being a support person when I needed one.
