I haven't noticed any unusual delay opening other programs such as
Photoshop or Office.

Two other things you could try:

- Disable hardware acceleration. Several years ago, I did that on my installation, when I had quirkiness with fonts display. However, depending on your video card, there may be issues that turn up with performance issues. I do know that since the release of Thunderbird 38.0.1 a couple of weeks ago, I've seen a number of people reporting either noticeable slowness, or crash problems, and for some disabling hardware acceleration has helped.

- If your mail client has several mail and/or news accounts defined, consider reducing the frequency of checking for new content. I had problems with occasional total non-responsiveness, and I found that when I set the news servers to check less frequently, and also on slightly different schedules (e.g., one checking every 55 minutes, one checking every 60 minutes, one checking every 65 minutes), I saw a noticeable improvement, when I wasn't checking all the news servers simultaneously. In a similar way de-synchronizing checks for mail seems to help, especially since I have a lot of content handling rules in place.

Neither of these are a panacea, but either may help a little.
