I think with all of your help, I figured it out. I imported the names from
a d-base file, but I imported it through Filemaker, not ebase. I am going
to reimport using the ebase interface, and hopefully the record number will
appear. I thought the black number on the record was the record number. I
did not realize that it was the blue one. (That is the one that appears on
the record that works.)
Well, wish me luck, I am going to reimport 750 records.

How did you add the names? With the Add Names button? If you added
records with the FMP routine through the File menu, you won't get all
the proper adjustments to the Payments, Contacts, etc. files and the
system won't work properly.
Let me know the answer to above and I'll think more about this.
