Contact records are missing no more! What happened is that somehow the
import order (in the Batch Process script in contacts_.102) got off by one
line, so things were actually importing, but in a way that didn't result in
meaningful contact records. I just resaved the script with the correct
import order and everything is fine now.

Sorry if this seems pedantic, but I need to check...
When the output wizard shows you the option to create contact
records, you are checking the box to create them, aren't you?
