You're doing everything right, and gave a very clear statement of the
problem. The answer, unfortunately, isn't as easy. A script in either
the names file or the setup file is damaged, which is usually a sign
that there is more damage in the file. It's likely that at some time
in the past a machine crashed and damaged the files, and the person
in your chair at the time used FileMaker's "recover" function, which
doesn't work very well.

You will need to abandon the file set you are using now. It sounds as
if this is not a recent problem, since you don't mention any episode
like a crashed machine that might have caused the problem. Therefore
any recent backups you have are also probably damaged. I would
suggest, however, that you close your working copy of ebase and
attempt to open backup file sets until you find one without the
problem. This will give you an idea of how long the problem has been
around.

At that point you can decide whether to use the good backup and
re-key the data you entered since that backup was made, or to migrate
your data to a fresh set of files.

Migrating the data to a new file set is pretty straightforward, but
it will take a few hours, and there are a couple of tricks -
primarily remembering to re-set the index on any auto-enter fields to
avoid duplicate record numbers. Since you suggest you're pretty new
to ebase, and presumably Filemaker, it would be a good idea to look
for some help if that's where you need to go.
