Changing the pager host was a temporary solution at best. It is likely Yahoo eventually got around to disabling all servers providing access to the old login method. In the end, upgrading Pidgin to version 2.5.7 or getting a version backported with the fixes from your package provider is the only way to fix this issue. http://pidgin.im/download/ubuntu/ provides directions for obtaining updated Pidgin packages for Ubuntu releases.
