This should work:

1. Open Pidgin.
2. Accounts > Manage Accounts > Add... button.
3. In Protocol drop-down list, select Google Talk. Enter your username in

the username and password in their respective fields.
4. Go to the Advanced tab. Check "Force old (port 5223) SSL". In the
"Connect port" field, type "443". "Connect server" as "talk.google.com"

5. In the Proxy tab, make sure you have Gnome Proxy Settings selected.
6. You're done.
