The clock means "Away" not idle. The status icon (and the rest of then entry) gets dimmed on idle. So "Available" and idle is perfectly reasonable.
Is it always the same people?
What idle reporting method do those people have selected in pidgin? Is it
'From last sent message' by any chance?
