//Hello Eion,
At boot time today, Pidgin launches and crashes immediately afterwards. Again.... It seemed to have stabilized yesterday after disabling the encryption plugin by removing /usr/lib/pidgin/encrypt.so. It gets messier by the day, so I am now purging all so I may start again with a clean slate:

  purple-hangouts
  purple-skypeweb
  telegram-purple
  pidgin-plugin-pack
  pidgin-otr
  pidgin

and auto-removing unneeded packages:

  libgcrypt20
  libgtkspell0
  libotr5
  libprotobuf-c0

I will re-install and reconfigure all after reboot, and report here in case of trouble.
Thank you,
-cedric

Hi again,

Which protocols are you seeing no buddies for? Are you actually connected to the accounts (see in Accounts->Manage Accounts... From the buddy list) and set to Online/Available in the buddy list?

What protocols are you unable to connect to? You might need to email though a debug log from Help->Debug Window as you reconnect to the account to be able to see what's going on with things and work out why you aren't seeing any buddies.

Also make sure you cc in the support@ mailing list in case someone else is able to help with your problem.

Cheers,
Eion

    Elion,
    I renamed the file /usr/lib/pidgin/encrypt.so and that makes
    pidgin stable at launch.
    But apparently there is more to it. None of my buddies can see me
    online and vice versa.
    I will do what you advise, i.e. contact with Bill Tompkins of
    Pidgin-Encryption. I just opened a ticket in
    https://ourceforge.net/p/pidgin-encrypt/support-request
    <https://ourceforge.net/p/pidgin-encrypt/support-request>
    I am tempted to purge and reinstall all but I will wait in case I
    am asked to run more debug test on my broken pidgin install.

    Thanks.

    Hi Cedric,

    This looks like it's crashing in the pidgin-encription plugin.
    Try uninstalling this plugin (or disabling by removing
    /usr/lib/pidgin/encrypt.so) and try again.

    You might also want to pass the backtrace onto the authors of
    that plugin to see if they can offer any advice on any
    workarounds or fixes.

    Cheers,

        Hi Eion,
        thanks for responding !
        Here is my gdb trace log file.
        When run from the debugger context, pidgin just hangs where
        it crashes when outside that said context. So Not knowing
        what to do, I let it hang in there and continued with the
        various steps detailed here
        <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace>. At the end when quitting
        the debugger, a message asked whether I also wanted to
        terminate the hanged process. I just answered yes and the
        greyed out Pidgin buddy window just went away.

        Let me know if you need something else.

        NB: No idea if that is of help, but I run pidgin with Skype
        and Telegram also running in the background, although
        correcponding plugin install-notes mentionned that it is
        neither necessary nor a problem doing so.

        Cheers,

        Hi Cedric,

        If you could follow the steps at
        https://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/GetABacktrace to get a
        backtrace from the segfault, that would be helpful in
        tracking down where the crashing was occuring.

        Cheers,

            Hello,
            ===========================================================
            This is my second request for support. The first one on
            a different topic received zilch for an answer.
            I don't know whether this is because this discussion
            list is closed to newcomers or because my request was
            not correctly formulated or elicited no interest at all,
            or any and all of the above...
            ===========================================================

            Context:
            Pidgin 2.10.9 installed in 64 bit Ubuntu 14.04.4 (kernel
            3.16.0-50-generic #67 - Unity desktop) with following
            plugins:
               - purple-hangouts
               - libpurple-bin
               - telegram-purple
               - purple-skypeweb

            Upon pidgin launch from Unity system tray, the pidgin
            contact window appears, buddies appear gradually:
            Telegram ones, then Hangout ones, followd by Skype ones.
            Once this sequence is over the icon in the launch bar
            disappears, the pidgin contact window with all buddies
            too and pidgin quits. It all takes about 3 seconds and
            is absolutely reproducible across reboots. Prior to
            that, pidgin had worked well since installation, i.e.
            for about a week or so.

            As pidgin crashes, I do in terminal:

            $ dmesg | grep pidgin` gives:
            [  483.627889] pidgin[4349]: segfault at 0 ip
            00007f2e1a1e6468 sp 00007ffd63a9d790 error 4 in
            encrypt.so[7f2e1a1d1000+1b000]

            Segfault ! What do I do from here ? Any help welcome.
