At a guess, the other software is a firewall, possibly part of an anti-virus package. In that case, you need to contact the people who operate the server to find out the nature of the server and what it requires of firewalls, then configure the firewall to remove the block.

There is not enough information here to be more precise. Even the exact text of the error message might help.

You need to understand that Pidgin is a multi-protocol client, and most failures depend on the protocol used by the server.

If you have been told to use Pidgin by your employer, you need to get support from their internal IT support people.
