Israelis Speaking Out on Assault The Jakarta Globe, Friday, 9 January 2009
Some of the most penetrating commentary available on the current Israeli assault on the Palestinians of Gaza comes, some readers may be surprised to find, from Israelis themselves. I would urge anyone with access to the Internet to look up Neve Gordon (an academic at Ben-Gurion University) and his piece “Israel’s New War Tactic,” which originally appeared on the US site “The Nation.” Gordon is in no doubt as to the cynicism of Israel’s partial lifting of the blockade to allow food supplies into Gaza. Uri Avnery, a veteran Israeli peace campaigner, and Gideon Levy are two more sources of dissident Israeli opinion but perhaps best of all is the woman journalist Amina Haas who, unlike the vast majority of Western media personnel, has actually lived in Gaza and seen and reported from there for years, much to the discomfort of the Israeli establishment. Straws in the wind, perhaps, but living proof that not all consciences can be silenced. As this medieval siege continues, their courage in speaking out when the greater part of the Israeli media is simply a megaphone for the military is thoroughly admirable.
