Quo Vadis, Old City? The Jakarta Globe, Friday, 9 January 2009
As a frequent visitor to Jakarta, and someone with extensive experience in tourism (I used to write guidebooks about Indonesia for Lonely Planet), I applaud the idea of rejuvenating the Old City. This area is screaming out for some entrepreneur and/or government department to renovate the old buildings and turn them into lovely bars, souvenir/craft shops, cafes etc. Instead of building another identical shopping mall, let’s redevelop the Old City. Maybe link the main square with trolleybuses to the VOC Shipyard area, the Maritime Museum and Sunda Kelapa? This area could quickly and easily become a major attraction for tourists and locals.
