It Is Time to Stop Political Parties Littering the City The Jakarta Globe, Tuesday, 13 January 2009
Good afternoon, Jakarta Globe. In this letter I’d like to express my dissatisfaction with the way political party members and supporters post pamphlets and other paraphernalia all over Jakarta when there are elections. As the campaign season nears, political parties’ posters, flags and symbols have begun to clutter every corner of Jakarta. It’s great to be enthusiastic about a general election and political campaigning, but it ceases to be so if it infringes on the liberty of others. The regional and central governments really need to regulate or ban the placing of party posters and banners on walls, electricity poles, trees and the sides of houses. Party members should also be forced to clean up after an election. If they have no esthetic appreciation how can we believe it when those same parties promise to change the country for the better? Even now, you can find political posters from the 2004 elections in Jakarta on the walls of the Kemanggisan-Taman Anggrek underpass. If the current practice of putting up as many posters as you can is continued, by the time the 2014 elections comes around, Jakarta will still be littered by the remnants of the two previous election seasons. Thanks for carrying this letter. It is with little hope that I call on those in power to give this matter more attention.
