"Slumdog Millionaire" Is A Masterpiece The Jakarta Post, Thursday, 02/26/2009
The whole team of the film did a wonderful job and it was nominated for 10 Oscars. It is amazing that Bollywood churns out 1000 movies each year and so far only three movies have been nominated for an Oscar, but with negative results. Satyajit Ray was the first Indian honoured with an Oscar, the lifetime achievement award, when he was on his deathbed in 1993. Whenever British producers and directors made movies in or on India with the collective efforts of Indian actors and directors, they were awarded Oscars, for example Gandhi and now Slumdog Millionaire. Bollywood should learn from them and not simply copy the West. I think India is a great country and shows a transparent democracy to the world. Some Indians have protested about the name "slumdog" and about showing the poverty and slums of India. But how many countries have the courage to show their hidden slums? Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Teresa both cared about children from the slums. This movie has given innumerable messages to the world. This truthfulness has brought good results for the local people, for the British movie producers and this slum, Dharvi, will now change into Oscar village. Dev Patel is a promising performer, a charming, mature young man. Dev in Hindi means God; he must have done very good karma to achieve such global recognition after his debut on the big screen. All the young actors have done extremely well; their acting is wonderful and they have won the hearts of billions around the world. It seems Kenya is on the top of the world just now. President Barack Obama's father was from Kenya and Dev Patel's parents were also born in Kenya. Congratulations to the great team from Slumdog Millionaire for its marvellous success. Congratulations to India and to Britain. Yes, you all can.
