I've had very good experiences with good quality NiMH batteries - once I got away from trying to use an el-cheapo charger. Do _not_ economise on the charger, NiMH have to be charged using a very precise regime and many of the cheap devices simply can't hack it - in fact, I suspect that many of the older designs were essentially just re-badged NiCd chargers. In particular, look for chargers that charge each battery separately since that then optimises the charge regime for each, rather for the string of cells as happens in those units that charge two or four (or more!) in series.

that the 2600 mA versions would be even better.

My experience of high capacity NiMH batteries (i.e. >1700 mAhr), used with a digital camera, is that they are chronically unreliable; I would not consider relying on them for a recording.

I took to using AA Lithium cells (1.6V) in the camera, and got far more life out of them than any other batteries. At £15 for eight, they are ruinously expensive - but they just work. I note that the Tascam manual forbids "Lithium" cells - but unlike other Li technologies, these have a reasonable voltage.
