The Roland R-44 is good value but without gang-able it makes B-format life less convenient.
it should be pointed out that the gain ganging and calibration problem is way worse for a-format recordings than for b-format.
if your a-format gains are off, it's virtually impossible to correct it by ear later, and the whole geometry of the mike will be skewed.
if your b-format gains are wrong, the geometry will be more or less ok, only the "width" of the axes will change. say your y gain is off by -2dB, then a source 45° to the left at zero elevation will still be to the left, but a little bit closer to the middle. you can (to some extent) correct this by ear if you have a very good memory (or documentation) of the soundstage width and a calibrated monitoring system.
so i'd say with a mike system that outputs b-format (basically all the soundfields except the sps200), you can get away with non-ganged gains. with an a-format mic such as the tetramic, the danger of uncorrectable errors is very high.
