Yolanda, I suspect that the problem you have with RedHat may be the result
of hardware probes done by the various device drivers in the kernal. For
example, in my system, the IDE device driver, while probing for a fifth hard
drive controller would cause a system reset. After I found out what the
problem was, it was fairly easy to disable that specific probe (in my case,
I just add "hde=none" to the boot command line).
You might try removing any extra cards in your system. In my case, I
removed 8MB of memory, leaving just the 2MB which is soldered on the
motherboard, which caused the system to hang instead of rebooting, so I was
able to read the messages more easily. You might try removing your
harddrive completely, to see how it behaves, since the harddrive is not
necessary for the installation disks to boot.
You might also look at http://www.linuxhardware.net/ to see if anyone else
has a similar system and has had the same problem.
