Hi, Stephen,

A common trick with evaluation tracking recently
is to add registry entries which don't appear to
be related to the program, but which are checked
each time the program loads.

I use a program called REGMON to track all the
registry activity by a program. I turn it on just
before launching the program, then immediately
stop the logging when the program complains.

Then I carefully review the log. I have found some
fun tricks (like using a key labelled "nof" in the
file extension keys to indicate a program had been
previously installed).

Then I remove the offending "residual" key data and
the program will reinstall or, in some cases begin
working.

Some store "seconds since ..." instead, and by moving
the stored seconds count forward, some program will
suddenly believe they were installed yesterday!

Another way to defeat this is to keep a copy of the
registry files (system.dat and user.dat) as they were
just before you installed the trial program. Just
copy them back and start over as needed.

Hope this is useful,
Garry Hamilton
