On the arachne listserv there has been quite a discussion concerning the
pros and cons of using a ram disk and/or/instead of a disk cache to run the
arachne dos browser. I suggested a program called combi that reserves a
specified amount of xms memory, and then dynamically allocates portions of
the memory to a ram disk or to a disk cache, depending on the requests of
programs. There were several followup posts. Some liked the program;
others lamented the shareware price (about $20. as I recall). I tried
something that has worked in the past: tracking down the author and asking
if he is willing of make the program freeware -- given it is a DOS program
and is older software.
I did this for combi and the author graciously said ``yes -- it should be
freeware'' I reproduce our dialogue below. You can find version 113 of combi
on Simtel, but the latest version -- combi118.zip and combidoc.zip -- is to
be found at:
ftp:// ftp.inr.ac.ru/vvv
This is Russian site, and it would be nice to find a closer mirror. All who
wish to can now enjoy combi, without charge and with a clear conscience.
As stated below, the author would enjoy e-mail from people who find his
program useful. You can write Vadim Vlasov at the email address:
