TRUMPET Software, the Tasmanian developer, is preparing to compete
head-to-head with giant Microsoft with the launch of its 32-bit PC operating
system capable of running native Windows applications.
Called PetrOS, the new operating system is designed to play squarely in the
Microsoft heartland. An Alpha version of the system is to be released in a
month.
Trumpet founder Peter Tattam � made famous as the developer of the
once-ubiquitous Trumpet Winsock program � said PetrOS addressed a growing
mood of disaffection among consumers worldwide at the lack of product choice.
Mr Tattam avoided comparisons with the Windows operating system, but said
PetrOS was most like a Windows NT Lite, having done away with the DOS
underlay of Win95/98, and being fully capable of running executables
compiled for NT.
Whether it was compared with Windows or not, Mr Tattam wanted PetrOS to play
in the workstation market, and saw its ability to run Windows applications
as a major advantage...
