I'm struggling with a sticky bit of problem. I have a 33.6Kbps modem at
home on my main machine. It doesn't do internet, I have cable modem for
that, it just answers the phone, essentially. It can also dial, etc. It's
working lovely. I use talkworks pro to answer and take voice and fax
calls. Works great.
I have a 2400 baud modem on the laptop. It dials out, no problem. Can
access the freenet.
I've set up a little app called laplink which is supposed to allow file
server, remote control and chat over a variety of hookups, including serial
or parallel cable, and modem. I have it on both main and laptop
machines. (main is running win98, lap w95).
I was absolutely unable to make a connection via parallel null modem
cable, but then the laplink docs say that if you're not using their special
yellow cable, it might not work. Okay, it's not null modem I'm most
interested in and I'll try that via intersvr/interlink sometime.
I activated the laplink on SAM (main machine) and went off to work, hoping
it would activate when talkworks accepts the call. I have talkworks set to
direct data calls to available programs.
At work I first called home to see what would happen with the laplink
running, would talkworks just do the usual voice mail thing. No, in fact it
didn't answer the phone in the two rings it should. After about 15 rings
the line went still. Third time it went still after only two rings.
I hooked up the modem and laptop to see what it would do. It dialled in,
the line went still after only one ring, and laplink said "dialing failed,
retry".
It kept doing this. When I called in with a phone again, again it did not
answer.
I came home, the modem's little green light for TR was not lit though it
should have been. The two software apps didn't show any sign of concern or
record of activity. I tried getting it to dial out in laplink (just dialed
the time number) and it disconnected itself after one number was dialed and
said the dialling failed.
TR light relit now, tried the dialing out again, again failure after one
number.
Talkworks dialled out with no difficulty whatsoever.
I do not have anyone with a technical clue who can come over and help me,
so I can't reasonably just go over to the neighbors and keep trying while
someone watches the results here, nor have someone try calling from
elsewhere while I watch the results.
So, any suggestions how I can get a set up that allows me to call home with
my laptop and initiate at least file serving if not remote control, while
still having voice mail on the line?
Yeah, I'll trying using the laplink software without the talkworks pro
tomorrow night, but I have to have some sort of answering machine running
during the day for ppl to leave messages, so that wouldn't provide the
final solution.
