If we are talking Slackware, then all you need is the A set
and part of the D set (gcc/egcs, binutils, gmake, libc and
linuxinc -- this is specified in the D set info). If you
want to recompile the kernel, then you'll need the kernel
source (K set).

Yup, NFS is a resource hog. But I thought this machine was just
a router. I router does not need nfsd, mountd or portmap. It
doesn't even need inetd (surprise, surprise). Most Linux kernels
have networking built in -- they route, firewall and ipmasq without
a network daemon.
