It was simply one of the options that the linux installation offered where
it put the boot information on a floppy. It offered 3 options, boot
directly to linux off the drive, boot manager, or boot floppy. Since I had
my regular OS already installed to boot and couldn't write a boot manager
with the overlay software, I was left with only the floppy choice.

Inertia. It's not just an object at rest tends to stay at rest; it's
also an object in motion tends to stay in motion.
