Since the release of 8086 and the subsequent release of the 8088, Intels
haven't really liked to mix code and data on the machine code level.
With the cacheing methods used by Pentium, the mix has a much, much
worse effect. Just a shot in the dark that this is part of the problem.
See if there's another, newer, nearly compatible compiler you can use.
As to learning another language, only if you're interested; but if you
are, your suggestion of using one a computer can use is correct. This
would mean "not C", among other things.
