Do you have a local Linux user's group available in your area? Very often,
there are folks there who are most familiar with one distribution or
another. You may find it easiest to get started with their assistance. Once
you get the basics down, you can pretty well pick and choose amongst various
distributions. I personally like Debian, but it can be difficult for a
newcomer. However, if your local LUG has several Debian users who can help
you get going, it can be very rewarding, and would fit well on that
hardware.

I would check out your hardware against the compatability lists to make sure
there are no "gotchas", especially for the video hardware if you're
contemplating a GUI installation.
