You didn't say what hardware and software you have installed or I missed
that part? It sounds as though you have the legacy hardware and your
siblings have newer hardware and software?

I was using W31 with an old `386 4 meg of memory machine when my
oldest daughter moved to Texas. Same problem - expensive to call
frequently (am in Michigan).

I installed the last W31 version of AOL messenger (AIM). It allowed me to
get an online name etc with no problems and worked well 75% of the
time. If I had any other app loaded there could be lockups while
`chatting'. It was a heavy load for a 4 meg 386. :-\

Since moving my same setup to a Pentium 5 60mhz (not a typo it is
a 60mhz early Pentium) AIM seems to be happy with my 16 meg of
memory and I have had few problems using it.

It's free, easy to setup, and quite popular out there.

Unless you have reasons for not installing even a minimal W31 setup
I would recommend using AIM. It will work for you and will be easy
for your siblings to locate, download, and install (if it isn't already on
their computers).
