If you have an IP address....you can never keep somebody from finding it. There are enough scanners out there that anybody wanting to find a machine to hack can easily find one. Scanners can scan whole networks for services running on standard ports to find a machine to examine further. Don't run services you don't need (http, ftp, etc). This reduces your chance of being "scanned". Disable root login as was discussed already on this list.
