Hmmnnn..... I think there is a case for a simple gui interface - especially if it's
similar to Windows. (You don't HAVE to use it, ofcourse.)
Thanks to SuSE 5.3 and KDE, I am seriously looking at moving our organisation to SuSE
Linux. (Which move may well mean putting my job on the line) I've been using Redhat
for some time as an Internet server etc, and have no real complaints.
BUT having the alternative of using a GUI like KDE suddenly opens up a world of
possibilities, as far as use on the desktop is concerned, and may even mean that we
could save ourselves a couple of hundred thousand bucks in the next financial year....
Like many people, I don't have the experience/training to use Redhat to anything like
its real potential - but tools like YaST allow me to do things with SuSE Linux that I
had'nt even dreamed of trying before.
SuSE also has a "quality feel" that is not quite there with Redhat 5.1 in my opinion.
There is still some way to go ofcourse - It took me a day to install the Real Audio
Player under Linux (In Windows it took 30 seconds). I spent several days getting PPP
to work on my home PC. At work I've been struggling mightily for a week to get PPP
working on a PC which is also on an Ethernet LAN. (I've got it dialing-out okay, but
no luck yet with passing any traffic over the link) I could go on....
I am only doing this (mostly in my own time) because I am an enthusiast, and,
perhaps, because I am so damned tired of the unreliability of certain other operating
systems.
If SuSE can get to the stage where they can go the whole way in making it possible
for a newbie like me to do all the things I want, without having to spend days and
days looking at FAQ's and Howto's - and without having to beg for help on lists like
this - THEN watchout! I suspect that day is not too far off, and will, I predict,
bring about something of a revolution!
Good luck to all at SuSE - my thanks and best wishes to all on the list. May you all
have a peaceful and happy Christmas season, and a very prosperous and SuSE oriented
New Year!

Here you go folks. The january 1999 issue of Linux Journal has the Reader's Choice
Awards.
On Page - 30
Favorite Linux Distribution
Winner: S.u.S.E.
Runner Up: Red Hat
I think RH is slipping because they copy M$ 95, interface and configuration
management. Might as well stay
with M$ 95. Why switch to Linux?
SuSE and Slackware standout as the true Linux systems.
Peace on Earth.
Happy Holidays and Happy New Year.
