Well I have the same setup going. I know you need to have
inetd installed ans started as a demon. Also start the
httpd deamon and see if you can get the webpage on
192.168.0.1 from the other machine. This runs independently
of inetd. Of course, try to telnet fron one machine to
the other.

If the cards are found at boot time, you should see a comment 
like "Setting up eth0", when you boot.
If you don't see that, then you might not have the kernel
properly setup for ethernet.

That should get you started, on it.
