I couldn't get it to compile in the kernel either. So I use the 'alsa' sound drivers.
They work well. Better than oss (+ you don't have to pay 20$ + it's not time crippled)
I'd give you a url but I'm at work right now. Just do a search for "+alsa +linux" and
