I think you're on to something here. I just ran mandb as root, with the
following output:
Processing manual pages under /usr/man...
Checking for stray cats under /usr/man...
Checking for stray cats under /var/catman...
Processing manual pages under /usr/local/man...
mandb: warning: /var/catman/local/300 has no version identifier
mandb: can't create index cache /var/catman/local/300: Try again
mandb: can't lock index cache /var/catman/local/300: Try again
mandb: warning: can't update index cache /var/catman/local/300: Try again
Processing manual pages under /usr/X11R6/man...
Checking for stray cats under /usr/X11R6/man...
Checking for stray cats under /var/catman/X11R6...
Processing manual pages under /usr/openwin/man...
Checking for stray cats under /usr/openwin/man...
Checking for stray cats under /var/catman/openwin...
4 man subdirectories contained newer manual pages.
95 manual pages and 0 stray cats were added.
Could there be an ownership/permissions problem in /var/catman/local?
What are the proper owner/permissions for the /var/catman/....
structure?
