YES! That proved to be the key. After running 'mandb' as root and 
getting the warning messages I posted yesterday, I calmed down <g> and 
reflected a little.

I renamed the offending /var/catman/local/index.bt, reran 'mandb', got 
no warnings, and now 'man' works fine.

Thanks again, Andreas and everyone else who responded. Sanity is 
restored.
