I just went through this last weekend when I upgraded my home's network
server. I have a script of ipfwadm commands I had been using since I
first started using SuSe Linux 5.2. I had upgraded to 5.3 and every
thing was still working. It was when I upgraded to 6.0 that my IP
Masquerading quite workgin. All of my local system could ping and
connect to the server by no packets were being routed outside to our
ISP. My solution was to go and hand edit /etc/rc.config and set
"IP_FORWARD=yes". As of SuSE 6.0 it defaults to "no".
I posted this problem to this mailing list and received a reponse.
Apparently for SuSE 6.0 they decided to follow the RFC that states that
a workstation should not automatically do any IP forwarding. I don't
think this was documented any where. I don't mind them following this
RFC and probably for a majority of workstations this new default setting
is the correct thing to do. It's just a pain for those of us that
already had a server system running with IP Masquerading and this little
change breaks an important feature.
