Im no expert.. ;-) but, my understanding/perception is one of winmodems
traits are plug and play meaning the os detects it and issues irqs as
needed. <the modem is dependant on the os>
Whereas a jumpered modem needs/should be issued an irq by the instaler.
A nice modem detecter is wvdial (as well as an easy ppp dialup program) Id
suggest to first see if it has jumpers, if it does install it and then
install wvdial then see if its detected. You may have to try different irqs
and if its a  compaq you'll have to wrangle with the innane setup in the
bios.
all in all youll know if it works or not
