The 2.2.3 kernel runs properly on the standard
suse6 distribution.
There is a difference in the setup for compiling
a kernel on suse6, depending on whether you want a
2.0* kernel or a 2.2* kernel.
The 2.036 kernel needs to be compiled with the older
gcc version; whereas the 2.2* kernel is best compiled with egcs.
Under suse6, there is a package called "gcc front".
If you install it, you can compile the 2.0.36 kernel;
if you don't install it, you have egcs as your compiler,
which can effectively compilr the 2.2.* series kernels.
