It is (like any other card) accelerated for 2D. Very fast, too.
As for 3D, well, there really isn't 3D yet for Linux, except for Quake in
3dfx, using an old port of Glide and Mesa.
(I think both Xinside and MetroLink were doing something about that, but
I'm not sure)
I boot Windoze to play games, and there I have the best 3D card for
Direct3D and OpenGL (this latter with a full ICD, which works great with
"serious" stuff too). On Linux (which I use for everything except games) I
have a very fast XFree86 driver.
Both nVidia and 3dfx have promised "full" 3D for Linux / XFree86 in the
future, but until then, I have to use Windoze for games.
