I followed the OSS instructions and recompiled the kernel with sound as
modular, but did not activate it. Then I ran install-oss. When it was
done I changed to the /opt/oss dir and ran soundconf and made sure my
irq and base addresses were correct. Then I put the sound-on command in
boot.local. I also ran the mixer program and set the volume at 20% or
some such value, I don't remember exactly what, so that I wouldn't get a
big snap when the sound drivers activated. The sound is beautiful. When
I run KDE CD Player my Sony speakers give a rich sound.
