Hi SuSE-friends,

perhaps someone on this list can comment on the following question of a
friend of mine?

Best regards, Alex Angerhofer.

I'm going to be setting up 3 Linux servers. I'm going to be buying
them as part of an order from Gateway. I'm curious to know what
kind of experiences people have had on campus running Linux on
Gateway computers and if the systems I'm look at will support
Linux. The systems will be run 24/7 and depended upon for mission
critical applications (determining cancer treatments for children
and for the collection of the subsequent research data). It is
imperative that the systems are *absolutely stable*.

I'm looking at the E-4200 450mhz Model:
 PIII 450 mhz w/512 cache
TI Rage Pro Turbo 8MB 2x AGP Graphics Accelerator
13GB 5400RPM Ultra ATA hard drive
 13X min. / 32X max. CD-ROM
Slots: Three 32-bit PCI, One 16-bit ISA,
        One PCI/ISA and One AGP
 3COM PCI 10/100 Twisted Pair Ethernet w/WOL
 TR5 IDE Tape Backup Unit

Much of the hardware included in the system is too new to be
listed on the supported hardware lists. My general experience
with the Linux-Hardware relationship has been bad (I know
Signal 11's very well), so I'm trying to be very cautious.

Politically it's possible for me to purchase hardware from Gateway,
and possible for me to purchase the E-4200 model because we are
purchasing additional E-4200's for desktop win95 use. Unless this
hardware is unable to run Linux, it is the hardware I must purchase.
Alternative hardware from Gateway would be an option.

Thanks for whatever insight you can provide.

        - VAB
