I have had exactly the same problem on my standalone 486/33MHz at home.
Thought it was due to my old hardware (et4000 based noname card) only able
to run X in 8bpp.

Installed xsvga 3.3.3-3 and tried to run gimp; alas, the system crashed
back to the console exactly as you describe it.

I re-installed xsvga-3.3.2.3  from the SuSE 5.3 distro- and gimp runs fine
with the warnings messages about data loss due to the 8bpp.

Mind you, I am  running gimp for fun on such a system :-)
