  I need to apologize, I mistakenly mistook char-major (which is a
serial callout) as net-pf-5 (which is the appletalk callout). The
char-major line should look as follows:
  alias char-major-5        serial

the net-pf-5 you can leave as off as that will guarantee that it doesn't
try loading. If that doesn't solve the problem, take a look in the
conf.modules file and see how many of the char-major lines are listed as
serial like the above, there should be (1) for each serial device on
your system.
  ie: modem, mouse, etc..
if you have only the (2) serial devices, then there should only be (2)
of those char-major lines listed as serial located at char-major-4 and
5. If that doesn't do it, or you have more serial lines listed then
actual serial devices, then you need to turn off the extra ones with the
off flag.
  Hope that helps. Again, sorry for my mistake.
