I don't have any experience with this soundcard/chipset
but you might want to check out the alsa drivers at
http://alsa.jcu.cz. I just did a quick check on the supported
soundcards
page at http://alsa.jcu.cz/soundcards.html.
The ES1869 and other ESS chipset are listed but not the ES1868
that your card seems to have. It would, however, be worth checking out
the
alsa-users mailing list archive to see if there have been any postings
about the getting the ES1868 based cards to work. The archive is at
 http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/.

If you do decide to go with the alsa driver you will also need to

get the alsa-util and alsa-lib packages. The soundcard is muted by
default
when the driver is loaded. The utils package contains mixers to unmute
the output and also playing and recording utilities. I understand that
other
mixers don't work with the driver, kmixer wouldn't even load for me after
I installed
the driver and utils. kscd and kmidi (from KDE Beta 4) still work fine.

If the alsa driver looks like it might work for you, please let
me
know if you need more specific information. I just got a
Creative Ensoniq (ES1371) card working on my SuSE 5.1 (kernel 2.0.36)
box.
I did have to install current versions of libtools, autoconf, and
automake.
Wav, midi, real audio, cd's all play fine. Great job by Jaroslav
and the developers!

Good luck,
Jesse McDonnell
