This quote is in reference to the ability of GCC to generate binaries for
the IA-64 architecture, rather than the ability of GCC to generate 64 bit
binaries in general.  IA-64, if you recall, is Intel's new architecture
under development for the so-called 'Merced' architecture.  Thus this
quote represents Linus's concernes regarding running Linux on Merced.

Times have changed since this document was authored, and it now looks like
muliple parties are working on this porting work.  If I recall correctly,
VA Research is acting as a focal point for some of this.

GCC certainly can generate 64 bit alpha binaries at present, and I believe
ultrasparc as well, if not others.
