Well, You must have at least 1 I/O board in your system. the I/O board is in the back and it is installed vertically along with the CPU/MEM boards. From the I/O board (which is the one that has most likely has your graphic card ) you should see a fibre cable connected either directly to the I/O board itself or to an FC-AL controller installed on the I/O board (in the same fashione the video adapter is installed).
That cable is connected at the other end to a thinner, vertical board, which is your FC-AL module for the E3500. That module carries your translated FC information over copper to the internal backplane. You have 4 channels (and 4 gbic module slots): 2 loops X 2 disk backplanes (Upper and Lower). They should be marked LA LB UA UB (L=lower U=Upper A=Loop A B=Loop B) That means you can connect 4 FC-AL : loop A - bottom disk row (disks 0 - 3) loop B - bottom disk row loop A - top disk row (disks 4 - 8) loop B - top disk row all you need to get it to work is to have 1 FC-AL controller connected to LA and your boot disk into slot 0 (of course you can do differently, as you like). This is an overview, but since the system as you pointed out, was running Solaris 2.6, I think (unless you moved drives around) that the issue is Linux not seeing the FC loop at all. If the FC-AL driver is not part of the minimal set of boot drivers, the installation program will not see it. If that is the case. you need an external disk unipack (or similar SCSI device) as your boot drive. I really don't know.. It happened too fast. Anyway, what kind of board is inside a Enterprise 3500? So, I'll know what I should looking for.
