The NVidia Suspend Howto is not really up to date afaict, but you can still try the stuff mentioned there. Basically if the X driver breaks otherwise working suspend, it is the X drivers fault and there is not much we can do about it. If there are multiple combinations of working options, it is possible that some are "more friendly" to the X server than others. I'd guess that "-a 3" is as friendly as it gets, since it runs in kernelspace long before X gets back at the graphics card, but maybe other options still work better.
